Mental Health Awareness Week

Divorce, Leadership and Mental Health: Taking Action When You’re Carrying It All

For women founders and leaders, divorce often unfolds alongside significant professional responsibility. You may be managing a business, leading a team or carrying financial risk, all while navigating personal upheaval behind the scenes.

The theme of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is Action and how I’ve reflected on this is a shift away from silent endurance and towards intentional self‑protection – especially during periods of profound transition.

At NE Family Law, we regularly advise women who are navigating divorce alongside business and senior leadership roles. Protecting your mental health, setting boundaries and recognising your capacity is not a weakness – it is a strategic and deeply personal act of self kindness.

Many founders and leaders are highly adept at problem‑solving and decision‑making, yet divorce can unsettle even the most capable individuals. Emotional fatigue, loss of control and concern about how the future looks, can feel overwhelming.

Taking action starts with recognising that you do not need to manage everything alone.

Taking Action: Protecting Yourself

Separate emotional and strategic decision‑making

High‑stakes decisions feel heavier when emotions are running high.

  • Give yourself time before responding.
  • Sit on decisions before making them final
  • Build your team around you, rely on the guidance and knowledge of trusted advisers rather than shouldering decisions alone
  • Break it down. Deal with what you need to in bitesize chunks.
  • Try to listen to your head, not your heart. It will protect your emotional wellbeing and your long term interests.

Safeguard your Energy and Boundaries

The nature of leadership often means reward in over‑responsibility. During divorce, boundaries become even more essential:

  • Lean on those who can often guidance and support in your decision making
  • Focus your energy on the decisions you need to make, not those you don’t
  • Delegate where you can, professionally and personally
  • Protect time to pause, breath, reflect and recover

Choose Advisers who Understand Complexity

Divorce involving business interests or complex compensation packages requires legal advice that is sensitive, strategic and forward‑focussed.  What’s just as important is working with advisors that not only understand but are also human.  That can draw on your needs at any given time, and help you build the team and the toolkit to draw on what you need to at the right time. That’s a team that understands:

  • The emotional impact of divorce
  • The realities of running a business
  • The importance of discretion and stability

Strength Includes Knowing When to Pause

Women in leadership are often expected to be composed, decisive and resilient at all times. Mental Health Awareness Week is a reminder that true strength includes slowing down, seeking support and allowing space for recalibration.
