Congratulations to Madeline Harris On Her Full STEP Membership – Here’s What it Means to Her and Our Clients

I am incredibly proud to share that I have become a full member of STEP and can now use the TEP designation after my name.

For anyone outside the private client world, STEP stands for the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners — a globally recognised professional body for specialists working in wills, trusts, estates, tax and succession planning.

Becoming a TEP is widely regarded as one of the highest professional standards in this area of law and demonstrates specialist knowledge, experience and a commitment to ongoing professional development.  This has been a huge professional milestone for me personally and the process has not been quick or easy (a testament to the standard of a STEP qualification). It requires extensive specialist knowledge, practical experience and a commitment to maintaining the highest professional and ethical standards. STEP members are also required to follow strict professional conduct rules and keep up to date with legal and regulatory developments.

Perhaps more importantly, this is about what it means for my clients.

A lot of people think wills and estate planning are simply about preparing documents. In reality, good private client advice is about understanding families, protecting vulnerable beneficiaries, planning for the future and helping people navigate some of the most important and emotional decisions they will ever make.

Every individual is different and their estate planning should reflect this. Some clients are business owners trying to protect what they have built. Some are worried about care fees or inheritance tax. Others want to provide for children from previous relationships, protect a vulnerable loved one or simply make things easier for their family when they are gone.

The law surrounding trusts, estates and succession planning is constantly evolving and can become incredibly technical very quickly. Becoming a TEP reflects a deeper level of specialist knowledge in these areas.  I hope that it reassures clients that they are receiving advice from someone who is committed to best practice and high professional standards.  This is becoming even more important in a world where AI and computer generated documents are taking more prominence.

For me personally, one of the biggest benefits of STEP membership is being part of a network of highly experienced professionals across the world. STEP brings together lawyers, accountants, trustees, tax advisers and other specialists who all focus on helping families plan for the future properly.  I genuinely believe that no two clients are the same and there is never a “one size fits all” solution when it comes to estate planning. Becoming a TEP strengthens the knowledge and expertise behind the advice I give and helps ensure my clients receive advice that is thoughtful, practical and tailored to their individual circumstances.

Private client work is often about much more than legal documents. It is about protecting people, reducing stress for families and helping clients feel confident that their affairs are in order.  I am very grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey and I am excited to continue developing my expertise in this area.
